Pre-McNair Program

About the program

The Pre-McNair Program (also referred to as Friends of McNair) serves as a foundational stepping stone for students aspiring to join the esteemed Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program at VCU. By providing targeted support and resources, this program seeks to address potential barriers, including GPA requirements, research preparedness, and other selection criteria outlined by McNair Staff. This program may also benefit students graduating in upcoming semesters or those who are not able to complete the full application process this cycle. 

Empowering Academic and Professional Growth

Through mentorship, occasional workshops, and immersive experiences, the Pre-McNair Program empowers eligible students to cultivate the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to excel in graduate studies and beyond. Pre-McNair students may be given priority consideration for the TRIO McNair Scholars Program during the annual application cycle, depending on eligibility.
